Holy Grounds Coffee House: Serving Brews and the Community in Fernandina Beach

By: Hope Johnson

Tucked in the heart of Fernandina, Holy Grounds Coffee House was born from a simple but powerful vision: to bring people together and share the love of Christ through genuine community.

Owner Suellen Rucker Smith dreamed of creating a place where stories, connection, and faith could flow as easily as a warm cup of coffee.

“There’s something holy about sharing each other’s stories over a cup of coffee,” she says—a reminder that for Holy Grounds, ministry comes first.

From the attitudes of the staff to the spirit of the space, Rucker Smith set out to make sure everyone who walks through the doors experiences the hands and feet of Jesus in action. That vision quickly came to life. The shop has become a gathering spot for loyal customers who treat it like a second home.

Local business owner Ryan O’Shields and his coworkers often meet there to pray before starting their workday, leaning on faith as they navigate the challenges of running a small business. High school groups use the space for Bible studies, police officers stop in for fellowship, and visitors are surrounded by images of Old Fernandina—historic photos from Rucker Smith’s father’s collection that remind guests that the town’s heart runs deeper than tourism.

Holy Grounds is crafted to help people feel God’s presence not just in what they drink, but in the atmosphere that surrounds them. Just ten days after opening, Rucker Smith saw her dream take shape before her eyes. Walking through the shop, she spotted three women praying together on the couches, while a group of construction workers nearby wrapped up a Bible study. Overwhelmed with emotion, she stepped away in tears, realizing, “This is it. This is what was supposed to happen.” Today, Holy Grounds stands as more than a coffee shop—it’s a space to love and be loved, to encourage one another, and to encounter Christ in the everyday moments.
