Jacksonville is home to the only national marathon dedicated to finishing breast cancer, the Donna Marathon. Since the initial marathon in 2008, the Donna Foundation has raised $9,100,000, helping over 19,544 families affected by this disease.
The Donna Marathon “Finish Breast Cancer,” also known as the DONNA, was founded by Donna Deegan, a three-time breast cancer survivor. Throughout her battle with breast cancer, Deegan learned about the hardships that people face when trying to make ends meet and the amount of assistance they need.
In 2006, the DONNA Foundation partnered with the Mayo Clinic, which resulted in the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program, where they conducted groundbreaking research. As the Foundation continues to help with innovative research, it also serves as a lifeline to those who need financial assistance during their battle against breast cancer.
Today, the DONNA continues to grow as the marathon has gained over 3,000 participants nationwide in pink attire, ribbons, and messages of support or in memory of a loved one. Whether a seasoned athlete or a first-time participant, each person taking part in the race plays a vital role in the mission to end breast cancer.
As breast cancer continues to affect millions of lives, the DONNA becomes more than just a race; it becomes a celebration of life and a symbol of resilience. Through the never-ending support, fundraising, and advocacy, the DONNA hopes that one day it will be known as the marathon that ended breast cancer.
