The Atlantic Beach Farmer’s Market

Dozens of pop-up tents spring up throughout Atlantic Beach’s Jack Russell Park each Sunday. The occasion – the Atlantic Beach Farmer’s Market.

Upon first approaching the weekly market, behind the steady stream of people making their way toward the park’s entrance, I noticed a variety of food trucks lining the parking lot. Among the goods offered at these trucks were things like coffee, lemonade, and even plant-based foods. However, further into the park, the selection of available foods only grew, featuring everything from locally grown produce to fresh Greek food.

In addition to the typical variety of foods and beverages that vendors expect to sell at a farmer’s market, many artisanal vendors of things like paintings or handmade jewelry and clothing had set up shop as well. One of these niche vendors was Annora, an artist that took up oil painting at the age of 17, who was painting live from an image on her phone. When I approached her, she was steadily working on a small portrait of a bright red flower. Displayed in her tent behind her were various unique paintings hanging on a metal rack, featuring everything from landscape paintings to pictures of animals and from floral paintings to more abstract works, like a black-and-white skull sitting atop a table.

“I discovered oil paints, and I just love working with the medium. It’s very fun,” Annora said.

With crowds of people strolling from tent to tent across the park’s old, uneven sidewalk, it’s clear that the Atlantic Beach Farmer’s Market is a crucial part of the small beach community. Often featuring a unique and ever-changing selection of items, it offers citizens a nice place to mingle, shop, and discover more not only about the city’s unique culture but more about their neighbors as well.
